Well, sorta. After much debating and going back and forth on the wall, we finally made a decision on our kitchen and living room wall.
And went from this:
In the end, we decided to go with a window, as opposed to tearing the whole wall down. As much as we liked the “open concept” feel, I wanted to keep some separation of rooms. I didn’t want it to feel like one big long room, with a few bedrooms at the end. And with a window, we didn’t have to rip up any carpet or fix any of the ceiling.
Our brother-in-law Matt came over and started making measurements on the wall on Wednesday night.
And by Thursday morning we were ready to go! First, off came all the trim…
Then he took an electric saw and just sawed down the middle and told me to start hammering holes in the wall. For some reason, this was really hard for me. It felt totally un-natural to start pounding holes through our wall. I took about 6 swings before he pulled the hammer out of my hand and just did it himself. 🙂
And the drywall was down! Matt had to re-route the electrical, so the cords would be out of the way. After 3, pretty serious shocks, he got it figured out.
we he had to cut the window. I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this before, but I hate messes. And dust. So this kind of thing drives me crazy. I just want to clean! I kept trying to follow him around with a broom and mop, but 10 minutes later the dust would be back.
After we got all of the framing and electrical work done, we decided to call it a night. And took Matt out for a well-deserved Bleu Ribbon Burger at Red Robin.
The next day, bright and early, he put the drywall up! And my dad came over to help Matt. Because I was completely worthless. I could hand Matt nails and his tape measure, but as for actually hammering, drilling and holding 2×4’s…not so much.
I love the window. LOVE it.
We still need to put some mud on the drywall. And eventually paint it and put the trim back up. I wanted to wait and show you all when it was completely finished and looking pretty, but that may be awhile, so friends convinced me to show it off now.
*Denise and Stef…this is for you.
